The $17 million dock and crane rail extension is expected to be finished this summer. Increasing racking for palletized cargo at the warehouse and upgrading the roof also is in progress, according to a statement by GT USA Wilmington, which is a subsidiary of the privately owned independent port operator and logistics company Gulftainer.
“In the coming months we’ll commence work to upgrade the cargo throughput capability from 350,000 TEUs to 600,000 TEUs and add capacity for roll-on roll-off cargo,” Eric Casey, CEO of GT USA Wilmington, said in the statement.
GT USA Wilmington signed a 50-year concession agreement in September to operate and expand the port, which has served shipping lines and customers since 1923.
As part of the concession agreement, Gulftainer, based in the United Arab Emirates, will invest in both the port and a new 1.2-million-TEU container facility at DuPont’s former Edgemoor site.
The subsidiary also will establish a training facility at the development site for the ports and logistics industries, which are expected to train up to 1,000 people annually, according to the statement.
