This fireside chat recap is from FreightWaves’ North American Logistics Tech Summit on Wednesday.
FIRESIDE CHAT TOPIC: A look into the technology of the small and midsized shipper market
DETAILS: The entry point for 3PLs selling into the small and midsized shipper market is providing the technology this customer segment is missing. Joel Clum and Kevin Hill, executive publisher at FreightWaves, define this market and the technology solutions needed to capture market share.
SPEAKER: Clum is the chief operating officer at Worldwide Express.
BIO: Clum has more than 10 years of experience in transportation and logistics. Prior to Worldwide, Clum was a founding member of CarrierDirect, a logistics and technology consultancy, and he was a consultant with Accenture Strategy. Worldwide Express is a non-asset-based logistics provider with a combination of company-owned and franchise locations.
KEY QUOTES FROM CLUM:
“We have hundreds of outside salespeople, both direct and with our franchisees, that are working with customers every single day because we want to understand: What are your pain points? What are the challenges that you have? What do you need technology to do to actually support your business?”
“We understand that we have to build a lot of our own technology given the uniqueness of our business. We’re one of the only companies that can do both small pack, LTL, truckload — span the gamut of all of these modes. There aren’t technology platforms that can do all of those different things. That said, though, we think that there’s a uniqueness to be able to bring in third-party platforms and integrate that make the sum of the parts even greater than the individual pieces.”
“Where we think that we create the most value is with those customers that shipping is not something that they would say is a core competency of theirs.”
