EC PRESENTS MARITIME SAFETY REPORT    The European Commission has adopted a report on a proposed package of regulations to improve maritime safety.
   The regulations address the liability and compensation regimes for damage related to pollution at sea, and the establishment of a European agency responsible for maritime safety.
   The EC said that its package of regulations “must be adopted in parallel and in a prompt and coordinated fashion.” The report will be presented to the council of transport ministers of the European Union.
   The EC has worked on maritime safety since the sinking of the tanker “Erika” off the French Atlantic coast last year. “This is an important challenge to do everything to prevent a disaster like the Erika from happening again,” said Loyola de Palacio, EC vice-president in charge of energy and transport.
