CARPENTER RETIRES FROM CSX CORP

CARPENTER RETIRES FROM CSX CORP    A.R. “Pete” Carpenter, vice chairman of CSX Corp., has announced his retirement after a 38-year career with CSX and the companies from which CSX evolved.
   The son of a railroad policeman, Carpenter started working as a brakeman for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, a predecessor of CSX Transportation. He rose through commercial and operating departments, serving as a manager in 17 different locations. Carpenter moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1988 to head CSX’s rail operating group, and became president and chief executive officer of CSXT in 1992. In 1999, Carpenter was promoted to the position of vice chairman of the parent company.
   John W. Snow, chairman and chief executive officer of CSX Corp., said that Carpenter initiated a “culture change” at CSX that helped to “eliminate the autocratic management style that’s been endemic in the rail industry.”
