AMO president receives Golden Compass Award

Honors also go to Dayton Freight Lines, Manhattan Associates, Southeastern Freight Lines and TQL, and Port of Long Beach scholarship recipients are announced.    Paul Doell, national president of American Maritime Officers (AMO), was the recent recipient of the Seafarers’ House Golden Compass Award.    Doell (pictured above) has been part of AMP, the nation’s largest union of licensed seagoing professionals, for 47 years.    “Paul has made a lifelong commitment to maritime labor and has been a longtime supporter of Seafarers’ House. His dedication to mariners transcends AMO and is seen in the support he has provided to Seafarers’ House over the years,” said Lesley Warrick (above left), executive director of the Port Everglades nonprofit.    The Golden Compass Award, in its 23rd year, is presented annually to those who have achieved distinction in the maritime world, whose vocation or avocation has been the sea or those who have ministered to or otherwise assisted seafarers.    Dayton Freight Lines Inc., a provider of regional less-than-truckload transportation services, was selected as a 2018 Carrier of the Year by GEODIS.    According to the announcement, the award honors carriers that demonstrate excellence in on-time pickup, tender acceptance, claim settlement, performance trends and customer service. Dayton Freight’s strategic partner, Southeastern Freight Lines, also was recognized as a Carrier of the Year.    The Port of Long Beach on Tuesday announced $100,000 in scholarships for 77 local college and high school students.    The students receiving the scholarships were recognized at the port’s sixth-annual Celebrating Education event, along with the 25 incoming high school summer interns and 22 local teachers who were trained in engineering education earlier this year as part of the port’s externship program.    Since 1993, the port has awarded scholarships to 541 students pursuing careers in international trade and goods movement. This year’s scholarships went to students from local high schools, Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach.    “The Port of Long Beach is committed to investing in tomorrow’s future industry leaders through internships and scholarships that will help support the development of a skilled workforce in international trade and goods movement,” said Mario Cordero, the port’s executive director.    Manhattan Associates Inc. has been named a leader in Gartner’s 2019 Magic Quadrant for Warehouse Management Systems.    “Manhattan Associates is proud to be recognized by Gartner as a leader for the 11th consecutive time,” said Brian Kinsella, senior vice president of product management. “Thanks to our customers, we’re fortunate to have the opportunity to innovate alongside some of the most forward-thinking supply chain professionals in the world. This close collaboration helps us bring to life technologies like next-generation automation, machine learning, modern mobility and IoT.”   Total Quality Logistics (TQL) has been named to the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Third-Party Logistics in North America.    TQL is a new addition to the Magic Quadrant and was positioned in the Challengers quadrant.    TQL said its gross revenues have grown from $523 million in 2009 to $3.6 billion in 2018. It provides intermodal, LTL and full-truckload services.    “We will continue to add new modes and specialized services for our customers based on their needs and our ability to execute those services with the level of service our customers have come to expect. Investments in technology such as TQL TRAX, our web portal and mobile app, is helping expedite this process and helping us serve our customers and carriers better and faster,” said TQL President Kerry Byrne.
