Trucking companies that have not installed electronic logging devices (ELD) are in a race against time to get them installed on their trucks before the Dec. 18 deadline. Omnitracs and Samsung Electronics are giving drivers another option to meet the regulation, according to Reuters.
Dallas-based Omnitracs provides ELD software and joining with Samsung enables Omnitracs’ solutions to be installed on Samsung tablets. It also allows the tablets, including the Galaxy Tab E, to be used for entertainment in the driver’s downtime.
Rocha Transportation was one of the first trucking companies that used the tablets. With 50 trucks installed, it resulted in drivers “saving 15 to 20 minutes of administrative time each day,” according to Rocha Transportation’s corporate treasurer, Zach Dirksen. “With improved fleet and device management, we’re seeing hardware cost savings of approximately 70% by switching to Samsung.”
The solution tablet was developed with the mid-sized and smaller carriers in mind.
The Omnitracs-Samsung venture hopes to have their tablet solution used by as many as 600 fleets by 2018.
