Maersk is looking inland

   Søren Skou, the chief executive officer of Maersk, wants the share of the company’s revenue coming from activities other than container shipping to increase from about 20% today to around 50% in “a couple of years.”
   Skou (pictured above) made the comment in an interview with the The Wall Street Journal and said less than a quarter of the company’s shipping clients hire it to move goods from ports to warehouses and distribution centers.
   Maersk wants to expand its involvement in areas such as warehousing, supply chain management and customs brokerage, Skou said.
   The newspaper said he also indicated the company is a big player in vertical markets such as retail but wants to expand its involvement in the chemical and automotive industries.
